May 19th Clark’s Report

Too early? Maybe. But 4:00 AM from Taylor had us on the bait grounds by 4:15, trolling in the dark and wonderin where the bait had gone.
Then the Garmin switched to daytime view as the sun peaked the horizon — bite on. Strings of fat macks filled the tank, and with eight onboard, we gunned it past Browns with the sunrise at our backs. Six to ten boats heading out for bait while the birds were dive-bombing off Saquish Head. With a tide high the boat too was still too heavy to poke in and explore.
No need to wrap around Bug — still one of the best feelings in Duxbury Bay. We tucked behind historic Clark’s Island, a place once proposed as the original Plymouth landing before the Pilgrims settled on the mainland. From the outer dock to Aunt Dottie’s, we drifted peacefully — just us, the bass, and the rhythm of the tide.
The big macks got slammed hard — but oddly, the bass wouldn’t take them once they were hit and limp.
Four solid hookups, two landed, all in six feet of glassy water. They blew up topwater but turned their noses at every synthetic we threw.
Clark’s Island continues to be a favorite — quiet, wild, and full of life. The locals swear they see deer run across the flats at low tide. We believe it.
As we pulled out, the birds lit up Aunt Dottie’s. It’s what you leave behind that always brings you back.
Looking Ahead: Nor’easter Incoming - likely no fishing until Monday.
Brace yourselves — a spring nor’easter is set to hit Duxbury on Thursday, May 22. Expect heavy rain between noon and midnight, with gusts up to 50 mph along the coast.
Water temperatures are currently around 55°F and are expected to remain steady. The storm’s strong northeast winds could push baitfish deeper into the bay, potentially attracting larger bass into our usual fishing spots.
Stay salty.
